Jonathan Woodham is Professor of Design History at the University of Brighton, and founding Director of its Design History Research Centre. He graduated in Fine Art from the University of Edinburgh and Edinburgh College of Art in 1973 and has an MA in British Romantic Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art, where he studied under under Professor Michael Kitson in 1974. Professor Woodham became involved in curriculum innovation in design history from the mid-1970s and was closely involved with the Design History Research Group and the Design History Society, founded in 1977. He joined the University of Brighton (then Polytechnic) in 1982 as Course Leader for the then new and innovative BA in History of Design, and was awarded his Professorship of Design History at Brighton in 1993, the same year in which he also became the founding Director of the Design History Research Centre at the University. His books include A Dictionary of Modern Design (Oxford University Press, 2004) and Twentieth Century Design (Oxford University Press, 1997). Professor Woodham is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.
